What is Disability Mentoring Day (DMD)?

DMD promotes career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands on career exploration. With leadership, coordination, and resource materials from American Association of People with Disabilities, local communities around the country organize their own activities to bring students and employers together for mentoring with volunteers at public and private places of employment. Bender Consulting Services, Inc. is the regional coordinator for Western Pennsylvania.  Our involvement in this initiative began when Jonathan Young, who worked in disability policy in the Clinton Administration, asked Joyce Bender to encourage businesses to become involved.

When is DMD?

DMD is always on the third Wednesday of every October and is implemented in locations around the world. Although the core experience is one on one job shadowing, event planners may choose to open with a meeting or presentations and/or close with a reception where students, job-seekers, and mentors can share their experience.

What is the Benefit?

By providing students the opportunity to visit a business in the community, DMD underscores the connection between school and work. This experience encourages students to evaluate personal goals, target career skills that need to be improved, explore career paths, and develop lasting mentoring relationships. Employers have the opportunity to demonstrate positive leadership in their communities, tap a pool of potential future employees, and learn more about the abilities people bring to the workforce.

DMD Kickoff Reception

A reception is held two days prior to Disability Mentoring Day each year to kickoff DMD. Local disability and business leaders are invited along with students who participate in DMD.
