Thinking Outside the Box

What's the number one skill small businesses should seek in new hires? According to successful entrepreneur and business owner Joyce Bender, it's flexibility. As President and CEO of a technology consulting firm, Ms. Bender knows first hand the traits associated with success in today's rapidly-changing workplace. Otherwise, she wouldn't be in business.

Waiting is not an Option

A wonderful book is "Why We Can't Wait" by Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a classic in many ways, as it explores the civil rights movement that he was the father of. If you have never read this book, I would suggest you read it. It is always important to know your history and to understand what formed issues we deal with in America today.

Gratitude

Joyce Bender

I believe one of the most important traits you should consistently incorporate into your life in 2008 is gratitude. As an example, a great company in America, WellPoint, lists gratitude as the top level of their "mood elevator". When a business person has a spirit of gratitude, WellPoint believes he/she will be in a position to make the best business decisions for the enterprise. It is amazing that the top level trait is not initiative, perseverance, or another important trait - it is gratitude.

Bullying

Joyce Bender
President and CEO of Bender Consulting Services.

In the United States today one group that is frequently targeted for bullying is students with disabilities. As we all know, anyone who is different is often the target, but the question is what are we doing about it?

Often young adults with disabilities have low self-esteem; a primary reason for that is bullying. There is no limit to what bullying in elementary school and middle school can do to a young child. No one wants to be treated that way by anyone.
