Former New Castle resident Joyce Bender has been elected chairwoman of the board of the Epilepsy Foundation.

Bender, chief executive officer and president of Bender Consulting Services Inc., will serve a two-year term.

She is the founder of the national company based in Pittsburgh and the host of Disability Matters with Joyce Bender, a radio show airing on

When Bender founded Bender and Associates International Inc., its focus was on matching the right people with the right technology and management positions. When she suffered a life-threatening, epilepsy-related accident, she created a new business to help talented people with disabilities find rewarding professional careers.

Bender has received various awards for her efforts in advancing the employment and empowerment of people with disabilities, including the 2003 Bush Administration’s New Freedom Initiative Award and the 1999 President’s Award, which was presented to her by President Clinton at the White House.
