Personal Awards/Honors for Joyce Bender


Joyce Bender, through Bender Consulting Services and her non-profit community work, has received a number of awards and honors for assisting IT professionals with disabilities take advantage of employment opportunities. These include:

Awards/Honors


  • Compton Humanitarian Award
    Joyce Bender received the James F. Compton Humanitarian Award in January 2002. The award was established in 1992 and recognizes the efforts of a corporate leader in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities by providing employment opportunities.

  • 1999 President's Award
    Joyce received this award from President Clinton at the White House for her efforts in furthering the employment and empowerment of people with disabilities.

  • 1997 Philadelphia Founders Award
    This award is given to an individual who demonstrates an outstanding community leadership role by supporting activities that have a far-reaching impact and which have made contribution toward the rehabilitation of a considerable number of citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  • Pennsylvania's 50 Best Women in Business
    Joyce Bender was named one of Pennsylvania's 50 Best Women in Business for 1998. This award honors outstanding achievements by women in the business world across Pennsylvania.

  • United Cerebral Palsy of Pennsylvania (UCP) Employment Award
    In 1997, Joyce Bender was given the United Cerebral Palsy of Pennsylvania (UCP) Employment Award. This was in recognition for her outstanding work place practices for all people of ability in the field of employment in Pennsylvania.

  • Leonard C. Staisey Memorial Award
    On November 26, 1996, Joyce Bender received this award for promoting the rights of people with disabilities and increasing public awareness of the independent living movement. The award is sponsored by the Three Rivers Center for Independent Living Foundation.

  • Carlow College Woman of Spirit Award
    Joyce Bender was selected as the Woman of Spirit for October 1995. The Woman of Spirit program is sponsored by Carlow College of Pittsburgh, PA and recognizes prominent women in the business community.

Board Memberships


  • TECH-LINK
    Joyce Bender served as Chairperson of TECH-LINK from 1994 to 1997, and is currently serving as a board member.

  • Epilepsy Foundation
    In 1996 Joyce Bender became a board member of the Epilepsy Foundation, and is the Epilepsy Foundation's Chairman of the JobTech project.

  • Epilepsy Foundation of Western Pennsylvania
    Joyce was named to the board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Pennsylvania in 1999.

  • ADA, Inc.
    In 1999, Joyce was named to ADA, Inc.'s Board of Directors.

  • SHOUT
    In 2002, Joyce Bender was named to the board of SHOUT.

  • Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom (PDEPF)
    Joyce is the President of the Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom, a non-profit organization whose mission is to train and provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities within the IT networking and web authoring industries. The organization was founded by Joyce Bender, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Bayer Corporation in 1998.

  • National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ)
    Joyce is on the local board of the National Conference for Community and Justice.

  • Business Advisory Committee for the Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT)
    Since 1988, Joyce Bender has been a member of the Business Advisory Committee for the IAT. The school is a 12-month training program, designed to train individuals with disabilities to be computer programmers. Joyce has been active in marketing the IAT to companies in Pittsburgh, and has placed individuals for no fee in permanent positions with companies throughout the Pittsburgh area.

  • Central Blood Bank
    Joyce Bender is a Board Member of the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh.
