Disability Mentoring Day History
Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) began in 1999, the same year that Joyce Bender received the President’s Award from President Clinton at the White House. The concept began to bring greater awareness and national attention to employment opportunities for people with disabilities. It gives students with disabilities the opportunity to visit a business or government agency to learn about a career of their choice and to experience the environment of that career for a day. BCS’ involvement in this initiative began immediately when Jonathan Young, who was involved with the White House at the time, asked Joyce to get Pittsburgh businesses involved. We have every reason to be proud that Joyce and BCS were the catalysts to get outside involvement in DMD beyond Washington, DC.
For the sixth year in a row, Joyce and BCS is again involved in the planning of this year’s DMD which takes place on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. As in past years, Wade Churchfield will serve as local coordinator for the Newark, Delaware area and Joyce Bender will serve as local coordinator for the Pittsburgh area. Their role will be to encourage businesses to serve as mentors, recruit students and match groups according to career interests. Representative companies who have participated in DMD are Computer Sciences Corporation in Delaware, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Bayer Corporation in Pittsburgh.
